Eden Hazard reflected on a special goal after tearing through Arsenal to consolidate Chelsea’s place at the top of the Premier League. Hazard scored Chelsea’s second in Saturday’s 3-1 win which saw Antonio Conte’s side take a 12-point lead over the Gunners. The Belgium playmaker ran half the length of the field and evaded any would-be tacklers before netting his 10th goal of the season. ‘I score a few goals, a few beautiful goals,’ Hazard told Chelsea TV. ‘But this one is special. It’s against Arsenal and we won the game. ‘This one is one of the best.’ Conte praised…
Sergio Aguero says he is happy at Manchester City but says his future could be decided at the end of the season. The Argentine was again left on the bench for City’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City — with 19-year-old forward Gabriel Jesus preferred for the second successive Premier League game. Gabriel has made a spectacular impact since moving to the Etihad in January and scored both goals in the win that moved City up to third in the Premier League. With the Brazilian becoming the first choice for Pep Guardiola’s side in the last two games, speculation has grown…
The problem with sequels is that they usually run out of steam by the time you reach the third or fourth instalment. At Arsenal, they are into double figures and the story never changes, especially when they come up against Chelsea. The Gunners’ 3-0 September’s victory over Antonio Conte’s team not only now seems a distant memory, but it also looks increasingly like an aberration. Arsenal rarely come out on top against Chelsea and, after being outplayed and outmuscled in a 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, normal service has been resumed. This was Chelsea’s eighth home league win against their…
Mauricio Pochettino said Tottenham are “ready to win a title” after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough kept the pressure on Chelsea. Harry Kane’s 58th-minute penalty secured a hard-fought victory at White Hart Lane and moved Spurs to within nine points of the runaway league leaders, who beat Arsenal 3-1 earlier in the day. The win followed a 2-2 draw at Manchester City and Tuesday’s goalless stalemate at Sunderland, but Pochettino dismissed suggestions his team are lacking a cutting edge. “They were two against City and Sunderland away,” the Spurs manager told a postmatch news conference at White Hart Lane. “But…

However, that seems to have changed. He wrote, “Instagram is for the devil. I think Hell is Instagram.…

Barcelona have made enquiries regarding Mesut Ozil’s contract situation at Arsenal, and are ready to make a move if they think they can prise the playmaker away from the Gunners. Ozil’s contract situation is well publicised, as is the reported stand-off over wages, but Arsene Wenger could be forced into action or risk the Germany international’s head being turned by the chance to link up with Lionel Messi, Neymar et al. What’s worse, the Daily Mirror claims that Barca are not the only European heavyweight on the scene, with Bayern Munich reportedly interested and Real Madrid in possession of a…
Chelsea made another huge step towards the Premier League title with a 3-1 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. A lively start from both sides saw the hosts open the scoring on 13 minutes through Marcos Alonso after Diego Costa had headed against the bar. Arsenal’s best chance of the first half saw Gabriel unmarked six yards out, the Arsenal defender’s header forcing Thibaut Courtois into a brilliant save. The best moment of the game came eight minutes after half-time, when Eden Hazard collected the ball on the halfway line. Evading one challenge, he then shrugged off the attentions of…
Barcelona closed the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid to just a point with a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou. Paco Alcacer opened the scoring on 18 minutes with his first league goal for the club and after the visitors had failed to make the most of their chances, Lionel Messi’s free kick squirmed past Bilbao keeper Gorka Iraizoz five minutes before half-time. Defender Aleix Vidal added a third midway through the second half for Luis Enrique’s side, who have now played two matches more than Real Madrid. The leaders are due to meet Celta…
In years gone by, any team struggling for form used to love a trip to Manchester City. If there was an unexpected victory to be had for a side that couldn’t buy a win, you could almost guarantee it would be City that failed in the most spectacular way. While that’s no longer the case — even as City have perhaps underperformed in the last couple of seasons, they’ve generally won the matches that any Champions League regular would consider their bread and butter — there is still some of that old “Typical City” mentality that dogs the fans. It’ll…

Teenager Dean Henderson is set to travel to Leicestershire as part of the squad having been recalled from his loan at Grimsby following an injury to third-choice goalkeeper Joel Pereira. Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Henderson, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Valencia, Young, Rojo, Tuanzebe, Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Shaw, Carrick, Mata, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Pogba, Lingard, Martial,…
Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Schalke as the Bundesliga leaders laboured to another unconvincing display on Saturday. Robert Lewandowski fired Bayern into an early lead with his 15th goal of the season but Naldo equalised from a free kick minutes later and the home side missed a number of chances to claim the winner late on. Bayern’s fourth draw opened the opportunity for Leipzig to close within a point at Borussia Dortmund later on Saturday. The result will increase the pressure on Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, who had come in for criticism following a…
Arsene Wenger has said Arsenal lacked “experience and quality” in their 3-1 loss to Chelsea but added that Marcos Alonso’s goal should not have stood. Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge was left in tatters as they fell 12 points behind the leaders after another disappointing performance at Stamford Bridge, where the Gunners have not won since 2011. And while Wenger argued that Alonso’s opening goal should have been disallowed for a foul on Hector Bellerin, he admitted that Chelsea had been the better team. “We had the right attitude, but we lacked a little bit experience and quality maybe as…
