The President General of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, has condemned the prolonged detention and trial of minors who participated in the #EndBadGovernance protest, describing the government’s actions as “callous and cruel.”
Reports indicate that the minors, some held for over 90 days, now face arraignments on charges of alleged treason.
Shettima criticized the government’s response, likening it to tactics typical of a military regime.
Highlighting the malnourished appearance of the detained children, Shettima stressed that their conditions underscore the urgency of their demands, which center on addressing hunger and hardship in the country.
“This is a national embarrassment, sending a troubling message to the international community,” he stated.
“These are our children who should be in school, building a future for our country, not languishing in detention for peacefully voicing their struggles.”
Shettima called on the Federal Government to focus on tackling the nation’s hunger crisis instead of punishing young Nigerians for exercising their right to protest.
