At least 10 farmers, including a Chinese national and several women, were killed in a gruesome attack by bandits on Tuesday in Wayam and Belu-Belu villages, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
Witnesses reported that six of the victims were beheaded, with the attackers taking their heads as they fled.
The assault occurred around 5 a.m. during morning prayers, sending shockwaves through the community.
Bala Tukur, a resident, described the scene as “traumatic” and confirmed that the violence has led many villagers to abandon their homes. “They mercilessly killed 10 people and injured many others,” Tukur said.
He noted that the constant threat of attacks has hindered farmers from completing their harvests, with some forced to pay the bandits for safe access to their fields.
Reports indicate a surge in attacks across Rafi, Wushishi, Shiroro, Mariga, and Kontagora LGAs, with bandits increasingly targeting communities during the harvest season.
In a recent incident, bandits stormed Zungeru town, abducting residents from homes and a hotel. Among those kidnapped were Saidu Yakubu, known as Abacha, and his wife.
Niger State’s Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed, confirmed awareness of the incident, stating that security forces have been deployed in response.
However, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun said further time was needed to confirm details of the attack.
The ongoing violence has left local residents on edge, fearing further disruption to their lives and livelihoods amid the ongoing insecurity in the region.
