The Police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned a 32-year-old bartender, Emmanuel Johnson, for allegedly stealing N2.3 million from his employer. Johnson is charged with theft and breach of peace before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, informed the court that Johnson committed the offense on June 11 at 10:50 p.m. at No 2/4, Peter King Ilogbo, Badagry.
Ekpo stated that Johnson failed to deposit the money into his employer, Mr. Collins Emeka’s account, and instead converted the funds for personal use.
“All efforts made by the complainant to retrieve his money proved abortive,” Ekpo said, adding that Johnson’s refusal to repay the money amounted to conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecutor noted that the offense contravened Sections 287 (7) and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015. Section 287 (7) prescribes a seven-year jail term for stealing from one’s employer.
Chief Magistrate N.A. Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Layeni specified that one surety must be a cleric, while the other should be a community leader.
The case was adjourned until July 17 for mention.
