The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted Governor Hyacinth Alia over what it described as the mishandling of fertiliser payments, warning of an impending food crisis as the new farming season begins.
In a press statement issued on Friday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom (correct name if Tim Nyor is not current), the PDP accused the Alia-led administration of failing to settle financial obligations to fertiliser suppliers from the previous farming season.
With the onset of rains and the commencement of a new planting cycle, the party expressed concern that delayed payments could jeopardise access to crucial agricultural inputs, thereby threatening food security across the state.

“The continued delay in payments has disheartened the community of suppliers and contractors, many of whom are now reluctant to supply the much-needed fertiliser for the coming season,” the statement read.
PDP said the crisis, which it described as “regrettable and entirely avoidable,” is compounding the hardship already faced by farmers displaced by persistent herdsmen attacks.
The party also questioned the decision to move fertiliser procurement and distribution from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Benue State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, suggesting it may be an indication of administrative disarray or bureaucratic failure.
According to the PDP, investigations reveal Governor Alia may be dissatisfied with the leadership of the agency now responsible for fertiliser procurement, alleging that the official in charge—despite suspected fraud—has been recommended for a higher appointment at the Lower Benue River Basin Authority.
“While we understand that the non-payment issue may be tied to suspected fraudulent practices, it is baffling that the same individual has been recommended for a higher position.
How can someone who has failed in their duties be in line for promotion?” Nyor queried.
The PDP called on Governor Alia to urgently intervene by settling all outstanding payments to fertiliser suppliers and contractors.
“The era of empty promises is over. Benue’s farmers require real, immediate support to till their lands and safeguard the food security of our state,” the statement concluded.
