The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended all 18 elected local government council chairmen in the state over allegations of insubordination and gross misconduct.
The Assembly directed the leaders of the legislature in the respective local governments to oversee the councils’ administration for the next two months.
The decision followed a petition submitted by Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing the council chairmen of refusing to submit the financial accounts of their local governments to the state government.

During plenary on Tuesday, the motion for the suspension of the chairmen and their deputies was moved by Mr. Isibor Addeh, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member representing Esan North-East I, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Akoko-Edo II.
After deliberation, the motion was adopted, with 14 members voting in support, six opposing, and three abstaining.
InfoStride News recalls that 18 local government chairmen and 192 councillors were elected on September 2, 2023.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier, on December 3, 2024, issued a directive giving the LG chairmen 48 hours to submit financial statements of their councils to the Assets Verification Committee.
The requested statements covered the period from September 4, 2023, to date, and were to be submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The governor emphasized that the financial statements were crucial to enabling the Assets Verification Committee to perform its duties effectively.
The Edo State House of Assembly, consisting of 24 members, is predominantly controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
