The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, has confirmed that security operatives neutralised two bandits involved in the recent deadly attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
Briefing journalists on Thursday on the security situation in the area, CP Ifeanyi disclosed that one of the suspected attackers was also arrested by the police and is currently providing useful information to aid ongoing investigations.
However, he did not reveal the identity of the suspect.
While local sources claim that over 200 people were killed during the attack, the Commissioner of Police gave an official casualty figure of 47.
CP Ifeanyi noted that the assailants had planned to completely overrun Yelewata but were repelled by the swift intervention of Police Tactical Teams and other security agencies deployed in the area.
“Yelewata is now safe. We have intensified security presence in the community, and additional personnel deployed by the Inspector General of Police have been stationed in vulnerable and troubled areas to prevent further attacks,” the CP assured.
He reiterated the commitment of the police and other sister security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that such tragic incidents are not repeated in Yelewata or any other part of the state.
