Operators of parks and recreational centres have been charged to imbibe new security measures to ensure security of lives of citizens.
Declaring open a one-day workshop for operators of parks and gardens and horticulturists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Minister of FCT, Senator Bala Muhammed, said intimating managers of public places on the need and steps to take to ensure security of lives and property was a necessity, taking cognisance of the current security challenge.
“These are trying times for us as a nation, but we all need to rise up to the challenge and defend our unity from these terrorist groups.
“These trying times I believe would soon fade away with our collective efforts.
“Be assured that government is living up to the challenge posed by the insurgency, and very soon it will be a thing of the past.
“In our quest to provide development, conscious and deliberate efforts must be made to be security conscious, as no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of rancour and insecurity.”
Represented by the Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, Mr. Reuben Okoya, the minister said the ministry would in due course roll out guidelines to aid development and management of parks and recreational sites to correct those operating outside the concept of Abuja master-plan.
In his remarks, the Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mike Omeri, said citizens had a duty to work together with security operatives to defeat terror wherever and whenever it reared its viral head.
He explained that the workshop, with the theme, ‘Promote Safe Parks and Gardens Initiatives,’ was to equip Nigerians with the required security tips, and encourage them to ward off terror threat in the country.
“Our goal in this initiative is to practically engage managers of public places to adopt security measures to reinstate existing arrangements and galvanise a community of active citizens in the task of peace making and peace building,” Omeri said.
