Bucknell University Selects Widen DAM to Organize Images for Website and Other Publications

MADISON, WI–(Marketwired – Jul 30, 2014) –  Bucknell University, the largest and one of the most highly ranked liberal arts universities in the country, has selected the Widen Media Collective for its digital asset management (DAM) needs. The Widen DAM solution will be used within Bucknell’s Division of Communication. Bucknell plans to organize and publish images and videos in print and digital pieces used to communicate with students, parents, alumni, media, and faculty.

Like many colleges and universities, Bucknell has hundreds of thousands of photos that are used in a myriad of ways. The main challenge was managing those assets. They previously used a platform designed for consumer use, not large organizations. The lack of functionality required team members to spend large amounts of time cataloging and searching for photos to use in various projects.

“We set out to find a digital asset management solution that would help streamline our process, and greatly improve efficiency,” stated Andy Hirsch, Interim Vice President for Communications and Director of Media Communications at Bucknell University. “We wanted to spend less time on sorting and searching for that perfect photo, and more time producing great work.”

Bucknell began to search far and wide for the right partner in this undertaking. They talked with colleagues, various vendors and demoed several systems. The ability to migrate data from their existing platform was of critical importance, along with a detailed implementation plan including the ability for the DAM to adapt to their needs as they grow and change.

“Widen’s DAM appeared to be among the most user-friendly systems we looked at, and the customer service has been wonderful,” stated Hirsch. “It was clear to those of us who would be using the DAM that Widen was the right choice.”

The Widen DAM will be used within Bucknell’s Division of Communication to organize photo assets of various file types. The University is also considering taking advantage of Winden’s ability to manage videos. These assets will be repurposed on bucknell.edu, on social media channels, in Bucknell Magazine, in admissions communications, and in countless other print and digital pieces.

“We have established an internal DAM user group, represented by different departments within the Division of Communications,” stated Hirsch. “That group will help direct the way the DAM is used across the division and ensure we are using it in a way that meets everyone’s needs.”

“Bucknell’s team realized they had outgrown the limits of the platform they used to manage their images. We took some time to discuss some ways to make use of current information the team was capturing about their images and how we could migrate that information to their new Widen DAM,” stated Brenna Hale, Widen Advisor. “With their internal team of stakeholders and champions leading this project, Bucknell has set this project up for success and we are excited to help them produce their great work.”
