The federal government has reassured that it was determined to rescue the abducted Chibok schoolgirls alive from their captors.
Over 200 girls were on April 14 abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents from their school in Chibok, Borno State. Efforts to rescue them ever sunce have proven futile.
President Muhammadu Buhari, however, promised that the military would soon rescue the girls from their abductors, having been in captivity for over 500 days.
Buhari’s reassurance was conveyed to the parents of the schoolgirls by the Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, who hosted them at the Government House, Maiduguri on Saturday, on behalf of President Buhari.
The parents were given N100,000 each with clothing materials as assistance to cushion their hardship following orders from President Buhari.
“I met with the president last week in Abuja and he directed that I should meet you and console you over the missing girls. He urged me to extend his heartfelt greetings to you on the issue,” Shettima said.
“Buhari assured that the missing girls will soon be reunited with their families as efforts are being intensified to rescue them alive,” he said, disclosing that it was based on this premise that he invited the parents for interaction at the Government House Maiduguri to deliver the message.
“We call you here to console you and to inform you that we share in your grief. As parents, we feel sad about your predicament but God knows best.”
“The money is not a ransom or compensation for the missing girls. It is to provide a kind of relieve to the parents who have been devastated by the lost of their children.”
“We leaders are responsible for taking care of our people and are accountable before the Almighty God, as such the government will continue to render assistance to the parents of the abducted girls, as most of the parent cannot go to their farms nor carry on with their petty trading, because of the psychological trauma and agony they are going through,” he said.
On behalf of the parents, Lawan Shettima expressed gratitude to the president for his concern about their plight and assured him of their cooperation.
