In a recent development, Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, the head of St. Francis Catholic Church in Benin City, Edo State, has advised Governor Godwin Obaseki to intervene and stop the ongoing impeachment process against his deputy, Philip Shaibu.
In a statement titled “Between Empathy and Impeachment for Your Deputy,” Reverend Obinyan personally appealed to Governor Obaseki, emphasizing his perception of the governor as a cultured and educated individual.
Expressing his concern, Reverend Obinyan cautioned against allowing history to record the impeachment of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu under Governor Obaseki’s administration, especially in the context of Shaibu’s political aspirations.

The priest emphasized the importance of reconciliation and advised against the initiation of impeachment proceedings, urging the governor to instead encourage a peaceful resolution of any issues with the deputy governor.
Reverend Obinyan also called on the Edo State House of Assembly to consider the long-term implications of impeaching Shaibu, highlighting the need to avoid setting a precedent that could lead to retaliatory actions in the future.
In conclusion, the priest appealed to Governor Obaseki’s empathy, urging him to support Deputy Governor Shaibu, not just for Shaibu’s sake but also for the governor’s own legacy and the stability of the state’s political landscape.
The statement reflects a plea for understanding and compassion in the midst of a politically charged atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in governance.
