COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) SOUTHWEST LEADERS FORUM MEETING HELD AT THE IBADAN CIVIC CENTRE, IDI APE, IWO ROAD, OYO STATE, NIGERIA ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 5, 2017.
Preamble
The PDP Southwest Leaders Forum composed of all top leaders of the Party including members of the Board of Trustee, former National Working committee Members of the Party, serving Speakers of State Assemblies and other key leaders from the six States of the Zone met at Ibadan today, Thursday, October 5, 2017 to discuss the common position of the Zone on the on-going National Chairmanship position of the Party.
Recalling that since inception in 1998 till date, our Party has had twelve (12) National Chairmen in the following persons namely Dr. Alex Ekwueme (1998), Chief Solomon Lar (1998 – 1999), Chief Barnabas Gemade (1999 – 2001), Chief Audu Ogbeh (2001 – 2005), Senator Amodu Alli (2005 – 2008), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor (2008 – 2010), Dr. Okwusileze Nwodo (2010), Dr. Haliru Mohammed (2010), Alhaji Kawu Baraje (2011 – 2012), Dr. Bamanga Tukur (2012 – 2014), Dr. Adamu Mu-auzu (2014 – 2015), Prince Uche Secondus (acting Chairman, 2015 – 2016) and Senator Ahmed Makarfi (National Caretaker Committee Chairman, 2016 till date.
Noting that since the inception of the PDP in 1998, it is only the Southwest out of the six geo-political zones that has not held the position National Chairman despite the historic contributions of the Zone to the development of the Party.
Recalling that at the May 21st 2016 National Convention of the Party held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in which the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Chairmanship position was conceded to the Southwest consequent upon the speech of Dr. Peter Odili, the former Governor of Rivers State.
Realising that the position of the National Chairman of the Party in the Southwest would boost efforts at membership drive of the Party and Party base.
Recognising that the Southwest has consistently demonstrated capacity for swing votes historically from 1999 till date in all General Elections.
NOW at the end of the meeting, the PDP Southwest Leaders Forum hereby resolved:
To urge the Party on the basis of the above premises, to uphold the Port Harcourt decision zoning the National Chairmanship position of our great Party to the Southwest.
