Empire’s Taraji P Henson – aka Cookie Lyon, the matriarch of Fox’s hip-hop drama series – has revealed that fans can expect to see a different side to her character when the show returns in a couple of weeks.
Season three saw Cookie finally get what she’d been fighting for since the pilot: a position of power at Empire Entertainment, the record company she built with husband Lucious.
Heading into season four, that means we’re about to see Cookie the CEO – and it’s going to change things.
“You will see a very different Cookie this season. More reserved,” Taraji told TV Guide. “She can’t pop off. She’s heading up board meetings.”
She added: “She’s still very stern and true to who she is. I think she’s doing good in this new CEO position.”
Season four of Empire will also feature some changes in new additions to the cast, including Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker who will appear in multiple episodes as music icon Uncle Eddie, a a major mentor figure from Lucious’ (Terrence Howard) past.
He’s in good company too, as the last few seasons have seen appearances from a load of big names, including Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Eva Longoria, Alicia Keys and Ludacris, so we can’t wait to see what else producers have lined up for us this season.
Empire returns to Fox in the US on September 27. In the UK, it has moved from its old home at E4 and will instead debut its fourth season over on 5STAR later this autumn.
