An Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the gruesome murder of a couple, Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye, and their son, Oreoluwa, on New Year’s Day in 2023.
Justice Basirat Adebowale delivered the verdict on Monday after a judgment that lasted over three hours, convicting Adekanbi Lekan (the deceased’s driver), Odetola Ahmed, and Adeniyi Waheed.
Background of the Crime

The victims, Kehinde, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) employee, his wife Bukola, and their only surviving son, Oreoluwa, had attended a crossover service at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta, on December 31, 2022.
After returning home to their residence on Oba Karunwi Road, Ibara GRA, at about 1:30 a.m., they were attacked by the convicted individuals. The assailants robbed, murdered the couple, and set their house on fire.
Their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son, Felix, were tied up and thrown into a river along the Adigbe-Obada road. While Felix survived, Oreoluwa drowned.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
The convicts were arraigned alongside Fadairo Temitope (wife of the first defendant), Adekambi Adenike (mother of the first defendant), Owolaja Aanuoluwapo, Usman Azeez, Abass Odetola, and Adewusi Lukman.
They faced a 24-count charge that included:
- Conspiracy to commit armed robbery
- Armed robbery
- Conspiracy to murder
- Murder
- Arson
- Escape from lawful custody
- Perverting the course of justice
- Receiving stolen property
Delivering the judgment, Justice Adebowale ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt against the three primary defendants, convicting them for the murder, arson, and other crimes.
She sentenced them to death by hanging or lethal injection, life imprisonment with hard labor, and additional 14-year prison terms on various counts.
“The sentence of this court on Adekambi Lekan in respect of count II is that you be hanged by the neck until you are dead or by lethal injection. May God have mercy on your soul,” the judge ruled.
Other Sentences
- Lekan’s wife, Fadairo Temitope, was sentenced to four years in prison on counts 12 and 14, to run concurrently.
- Lekan’s mother, Adekambi Adenike, was discharged on counts 12, 13, and 14 but found guilty of count 15 and sentenced to one year in prison from the date of remand.
Justice Adebowale stated that the convicts did not deserve the court’s mercy due to the brutality of their crimes.
