Organized labour in Cross River State has threatened to embark on an industrial action over the state government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage of N70,000.
Speaking on Saturday in Calabar, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state, Mr. Monday Ogbodum, reaffirmed that the strike, coordinated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), would commence at midnight on Sunday if the wage demands were not met.
Ogbodum disclosed that negotiations with the state government were ongoing but stressed that the talks would not deter labour unions from proceeding with the strike if the new wage regime is not implemented.
“Yes, we are still in talks with the government. We had meetings on Thursday and Friday that lasted late into the evening,” he stated.
“There is another meeting scheduled for today (Saturday), but that does not mean all is well, even though the government has shown some level of seriousness.”
He emphasized that signing agreements without implementation would not satisfy the workers’ demands.
“Our position is that even if we sign any document or agreement today, it does not amount to implementation,” he said.
The labour unions remain firm in their stance, urging the state government to act swiftly to prevent a statewide shutdown.
