A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Asuquo Ada, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing political realignment and personal conviction.
Ada’s defection adds to the series of high-profile exits from the PDP in the state.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Friday, Ada said his decision to join the APC was in line with his political aspirations, as the party controls both the state and federal governments.
Before his defection, Ada served as the Director-General of the campaign team for a PDP governorship aspirant in the 2023 elections.
He had earlier announced his resignation from the PDP in a letter dated October 23, addressed to the leadership of Enong Ward.
In the letter, Ada explained his decision: “I find conviction finally to resolve in favor of my embattled decision to resign membership of the Peoples Democratic Party as situations have so demanded.”
He added: “Change remains a constant factor that affects life’s situations. When nature directs changes to life narratives, one has no choice but to follow. I wish the PDP well as I entrust my future political journey to God’s guidance.”
Ada was a close ally of Gershom Bassey, a former senator and 2023 PDP governorship aspirant. Bassey, who represented Cross River South in the National Assembly from 2015 to 2023, is considered a founding member of the PDP in Cross River State.
The defection marks another setback for the PDP in Cross River, as the APC continues to consolidate its influence in the state.
