The Western Marine Command of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has seized more than 1,000 cartons of smuggled poultry products across the creeks and coastline areas of the border between Nigeria and the Benin Republic.
The federal government had banned the importation of frozen chicken and turkey in 2003 but with little or no enforcement since then, the products were still available in Nigerian markets. However, the NCS has resumed enforcement in recent months.
Comptroller of Customs, Western Marine, Yusuf Umar, explained that the effort was geared towards the sustenance of the ban on importation of poultry.
The NCS seized frozen poultry products worth over N12 million during the first week of operation “Hawk Descend” in the South Western axis of Nigeria and Benin Republic border.
