The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has issued a stern warning to Hon. Francis Waive, the member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
The lawmaker, who is a member of the APC, has been accused of endorsing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for a second term, an action the party deems a serious offence.
In a letter dated 15th September 2024, and signed by the Delta APC State Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, the party described Waive’s endorsement of Oborevwori as “gross anti-party activity.”
The APC leadership expressed deep concern over Waive’s public endorsement of the opposition governor, which they argue violates the party’s constitution.
The letter reads in part: “The attention of the leadership of the state Executive Committee of our great party has been drawn to a video recording that was posted online wherein you were seen and heard openly canvassing for support and endorsing the second term ambition of the Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This video has gone viral and has been viewed by millions across the nation and beyond.”
The APC further criticised Waive’s actions, stating that as a sitting member of the National Assembly under the APC banner, his endorsement of a PDP candidate is a “gross display of anti-party behaviour.”
The party noted that this act has brought “public opprobrium” and tarnished the image of the APC, in violation of Article 21:21(i) & (ii) of the party’s constitution.
The letter goes on to state: “Consequently, take notice that you have 7 days from the receipt of this letter to appear in person and provide substantive reasons why severe disciplinary measures should not be taken against you by the party.”
As of the time of this report, Hon. Francis Waive has not responded to the letter or the allegations levelled against him.
The APC’s threat of disciplinary action could have significant consequences for the lawmaker, as the party seeks to maintain unity and discipline within its ranks ahead of the upcoming elections.
The development comes at a time when political tension is rising in Delta State, as the 2024 governorship election approaches.
The APC leadership is keen on ensuring that its members remain loyal to the party and its candidates, making Waive’s endorsement of a rival a serious issue within the party.
Observers will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds and whether Waive will face disciplinary action for his endorsement of Governor Oborevwori.
