Bukola Saraki has said that Senator Dino Melaye, who is being hospitalised, is stable.
There had been reports that Melaye went into coma.
The senator representing Kogi west is being treated at the National Hospital in Abuja after sustaining injuries while trying to escape from the police vehicle conveying him to a court in Kogi State on Tuesday, April 24.
The police had accused Melaye of supplying guns to some murder suspects, who allegedly confessed that the lawmaker is their sponsor.
Melaye has since denied the allegations, accusing the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of being behind his police ordeal.
“After the sitting at the senate today, we resolved to come here because over 24 hours we have not heard of know about the state of senator Dino. We’ve just seen him and he is in intensive care. He’s stable for now,” the senate president said.
“We know he hasn’t eaten for the last 24 hours, we are trying to resolve that. He’s on fluids and he’s being seen by cardiologists, all specialists. As you know, he has other (health) issues, he’s asthmatic. We are a bit concerned but for now we thank God he’s stable.
“We want to thank the management of the National, the professional and medical staff for what they’ve been able to do. As for now, he’s stable, he’s being monitored. We’ll continue to pray for him that he continues to recover. He’s not in handcuff.”
Raising a point of order, Senator Mathew Uroghide (PDP, Edo-South) declared Buhari’s action illegal.
Uroghide said in part, “I heard very clearly when you read the letter that came from Mr. President over the payment that was made for the Tucano aircraft. I was completely taken aback because I represent a people.
“This letter that you just read to us now, with due respect to the office and the status of Mr. President, I want to say that what he just said, which you just read to us, is a violation of some of the provisions of the Constitution.
“I stand on it with every vehemence and I want to read Section 80 (1),(2),(3) and (4) of the Constitution.”
