It has been recommended that Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike not demolish people’s self-built homes, but instead to regularize the documentation of those homes in the areas where they currently reside.
This was the recommendation made in Abuja by Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Ajaero warned the FCT Minister to quit taking joy in tearing down people’s homes, saying that Nigeria is the only country that does not give its population with adequate housing but instead destroys the homes its people have made for themselves.
“I honestly think they should legalize those areas where workers are operating rather than demolishing them,” Ajaero remarked.
Wike can provide value by making legal the areas where individuals have established their own arrangements for housing (known as slums) until the government can offer them a better solution.
He bemoaned the fact that the Nigerian minimum wage of N30,000 would not allow people to save enough money to buy a house and retire at the age of 35.
