Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has charged the new Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Chris Ezike, to intensify the fight against kidnapping, robbery and cultism.
He gave the charge yesterday when he received the new Police Commissioner at Government House, Port Harcourt.
The governor noted that armed robbery, cultism and kidnapping had adversely affected the image of the state and urged the CP not to politicise the issue of security.
Wike noted that governance revolves around security of lives and property.
He said: “Do the best you can, to improve security in the state.
“Crime fighting should not be politicised. All efforts should be geared towards ensuring that investors return to the state”.
He asked the police boss to discharge his duties in a professional manner, urging him not to be swayed by those involved in name-dropping, for the purpose of securing the release of suspects in police custody.
Governor Wike also advised him to take immediate steps, to address the issue of traffic congestion and illegal parking of commercial vehicles in the state capital.
He assured the police command of necessary support, in its bid to drastically reduce crimes in the state.
Speaking earlier, the new police commissioner told the governor that the command would do everything possible to combat crimes in the state.
Mr. Ezike identified kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery as the most prevalent crimes in the state, adding that strategies had been mapped out to tackle security challenges in the state.
He also assured the governor that the police would work towards addressing the traffic problem in Port Harcourt City.
