The Judiciary Staff Union in Ebonyi on Monday in Abakaliki announced the calling off of its two- month-old industrial action.
The Chairman of the union, Jude Ukason, who announced it, directed its members to return immediately to work.
He said the strike was called off due to the agreement reached and signed between the union and the Ebonyi government.
According to him, government has agreed to “irrevocably’’ commit itself to the implementation of the terms of the resolution.
Mr. Ukason said that the agreement was toward the full implementation of Section 121 (3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended with regard to fiscal autonomy for the judiciary.
The chairman said that the government also pledged not to victimise any member of the union for participating in the strike.
“We have had series of meetings with the state government, represented by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, on ways to end the judiciary-government impasse.
“We are happy to announce to the public that after exhaustive deliberations, government has agreed to comply with the demand of the union in line with the court ruling.
“As a result of the resolution and signing of Memorandum of Understanding between government and the union; leadership of JUSUN hereby directs all its members in the state to return to their duty posts with immediate effect,’’ Ukason said.
He said that a team had been constituted to work with the state Budget Office to ensure compliance with the provisions of Section 121 (3) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended.
The Monitoring Team comprises the Chief Registrar of the High Court, Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and the chairman of JUSUN.
Meanwhile, the Attorney-General, Dr Ben Igweenyi, has praised the leadership of JUSUN for its good judgment.
Mr. Igweenyi said that government would ensure the agreement was implemented to the letter.
“Your action in calling off the two-month old industrial action demonstrated your love for the state and good sense of judgment.
“On our part as government, we will commit ourselves to proper and full implementation of every term of the agreement for sustainable industrial harmony and growth”, Mr. Igweenyi said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ebonyi JUSUN is the latest and 4th state in the federation to call off the strike embarked by Judiciary workers weeks ago.
The strike was triggered off by refusal by state governments to respect a Federal High Court ruling on financial autonomy for the judiciary across the federation.
