The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has offered N50 million to the immediate past governor, Godwin Obaseki, if he can freely walk through the streets of Benin City and receive a warm welcome from residents.
This challenge was issued by Prince Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the party and member of the Edo State Assets Verification Committee, during a press briefing held shortly after the committee’s inauguration by Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House in Benin City.
Response to PDP Criticism

Afegbua used the platform to address allegations and criticisms leveled against the two-week-old administration of Governor Okpebholo by the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He dismissed the claims as baseless and accused the opposition of attempting to distract the government from its developmental agenda.
He stated, “The opposition has claimed that our government shut down the e-governance platform.
That is laughable and incorrect. What they call e-governance was essentially e-corruption, as we were unable to access credible information from the previous administration.”
Assets Verification and Alleged Mismanagement
Afegbua defended the government’s decision to set up an assets verification committee, explaining that it is standard practice worldwide to conduct a status report when a new government assumes office.
He added, “The previous government lacked transparency in its governance process.
We, as APC, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, have a duty to interrogate the gaps left by the past administration.”
Challenge to Obaseki
Afegbua further taunted the PDP, urging them to invite former Governor Obaseki for a public street walk in Benin City.
“If the opposition is serious, they should invite ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki to Edo for a street walk. We are ready to pay him N50 million for that exercise and see how Edo people will respond,” he said.
Allegations of Opposition Disruption
The APC chieftain alleged that Obaseki had recruited individuals to attack the APC-led government and discredit its achievements.
He reassured residents that the government would not be distracted from its focus on delivering people-oriented projects and addressing the state’s developmental challenges.
Afegbua emphasized that the steps taken by Governor Okpebholo’s administration in its early days have already earned the trust and support of the people.
