The First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has refuted claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to influence the outcome of the upcoming Edo governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by deploying “federal might.”
Speaking during an interview on an online television platform, Mrs. Obaseki dismissed the allegations, praising President Tinubu’s commitment to democracy. “President Tinubu is smarter and wiser.
He is not at their level at all. I also want to praise former President Muhammadu Buhari for his democratic stance and using federal power only to safeguard voters, not to tamper with election results,” she stated.
The Edo First Lady further highlighted President Tinubu’s history as a reformer during his tenure as Lagos State governor, expressing confidence that he would uphold democratic principles.
She added that Tinubu’s focus on good governance and development aligns with the strides made under Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration in Edo State.
“President Tinubu, who is committed to good governance and continuity, would not disrupt the progress made in Edo under my husband’s administration, especially when the state has received international recognition for its development,” Mrs. Obaseki remarked.
She went on to express hope that other governors would follow the examples set by Edo and Lagos, emphasising that such leadership could lead to a better Nigeria.
“Now the father of the nation, President Tinubu would not lend his support to efforts aimed at destabilising a well-governed state.
If every state governor begins to toe these paths set out in Edo and Lagos, one day we will all wake up to a good Nigeria,” she concluded.
The Edo governorship election is scheduled for next Saturday, and political tensions have heightened with various allegations surrounding the contest.
Mrs. Obaseki’s remarks are seen as an effort to dispel concerns of external interference in the election.
