In the aftermath of the armed robbery attack on Sunshine Stars Football Club along the Ore-Benin Expressway, Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu had initially pledged to cover the hospital bills for the injured players and officials.
However, following Governor Obaseki’s announcement that the state government would take care of the medical expenses, Shaibu has withdrawn his earlier promise.
A statement released by Shaibu’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, clarified the decision, emphasizing unity between the offices of the Governor and Deputy Governor.

The statement read, “The office of Governor and Deputy Governor are one. We are not in any way in competition.”
This development adds another layer to the ongoing tension between Obaseki and Shaibu, despite reported attempts at reconciliation.
Notably, Shaibu has expressed his intention to run for the governorship, while Obaseki defers the decision to the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The recent incident involving the attacked football team has brought the differences between the two officials back into the spotlight.
