Following violence at the Ekiti State High Court last month, Senior Advocates of Nigeria Quakers and M.J. Onigbanjo have dragged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Ekiti State governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)over alleged violation of their right to practice as lawyers.
Suspected political thugs allegedly loyal to Fayose had on September 22 and 25 attacked the Ekiti High Court. The lawyers alleged that their lives were threatened by the attack and their rights were infringed on.
Quaker and Onigbanjo, who are lawyers to the litigants challenging Fayose’s eligibility to contest in the June 21 governorship election, addressed their petition to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe.
Investigation on the attack is still ongoing, after the National Judicial Council (NJC) directed the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abbah to ensure those behind the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
