The distribution of scratch cards for the procurement of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms by Ekiti State government yesterday brightened hope for some 1,400 students with academic requirement for admission into higher institutions.
Beneficiaries are, out-of-school youths and repeaters who were registered by the Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education (AANFE) – an agency of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology – to retake the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) supervised by the West African School Examination (WAEC) Board and National Examination Council (NECO).
Governor Ayodele Fayose, who flagged off the distribution of the free JAMB e-Registration scratch cards at Olaoluwa Grammar School, Ado-Ekiti, said the gesture will assist students with six credits including Mathematics and English Language pursue a course of study in the varsities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education.
Besides, the governor said it will take the financial burden off the shoulders of the parents and guardians of the beneficiaries.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Kolapo Olusola, the governor described the programme as a demonstration of his administration’s determination to ensure equal opportunity and education for all and for Ekiti to keep its record as the state with the least number of out-of-school children in the country.
The Governor stressed that the programme was initiated under his administration during his first term with the aim of alleviating the financial burden of most parents who struggle to make both ends meet, adding that he would continue to sustain programmes that would add values to the lives of Ekiti people, despite the meager resources accruing to the state.
The governor enjoined beneficiaries to gainfully utilize the opportunity of the free JAMB/UTME registration by working hard to secure admission to tertiary institutions of their choice within and outside the country, adding that the government would monitor their performance in the examination and consider those who perform exceptionally well for state scholarship.
He restated that his administration will not in any way toy with the development and training of youths, who he described as the future of the state.
In his welcome address, the acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Abiodun Jeje corroborated that the programme, which was initiated in the first tenure of Dr. Ayodele Fayose was designed to assist the vulnerable youths, who were out of school to continue with their academic pursuit.
The Permanent Secretary said that the programme included running continuing Education Centres in all the 16 Local Government Areas to train students who were out of schools as well as paying for their examinations to the point of checking their results.
Two of the benefiting students, Miss Alo Bukola and Master Tete Ebenezer who spoke for their colleagues thanked the Governor for giving them a second chance with the tutorial classes and for coming to their aids in the procurement of the UTME Forms and scratch cards.
They assured the Governor on behalf of the other beneficiaries that they would not let the state government down as they would work hard to record a near-total success in this year Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
