Heads of educational institutions in Ekiti state have been charged to be more security conscious and institute a formidable security network within and around their campuses to forestall attacks from insurgents.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Kolapo Olusola gave the charge at a sensitization meeting on security with heads of tertiary educational institutions in the state in his office.
Dr. Olusola said that there was a security report from the federal government alleging plans by Boko Haram sect to attack some campuses in the southern parts of the country, urging schools’ heads to put in place preventive measures to avert any attack.
Some of the measures recommended were the construction of perimeter fencing, installation of Close Circuit Camera (CCTV) to monitor and get records of what goes on within and around their campuses, reinforcement of school’s internal security network and provision of identity cards for staff and students and ensuring that they wear the cards at all times for easy identification.
They were also urged to let the Security Units of the various institutions begin a security awareness campaign and education for students and staff to get them informed on how to easily identify intruders and also to put in place quick intervention and rescue measures in case of any emergency or attack.
Responding, the vice chancellor, Ekiti state University (EKSU), Prof. Oladipo Aina and the Provost, College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Prof. Dupe Aladejana thanked the Deputy Governor for the information, assuring that they would go back to their institutions and work out how to ensure more formidable security measures to protect the lives of the people in their schools.
They explained that their tertiary institutions were faced with financial challenges and solicited more financial assistance from the government to enable them purchase more security gadgets and put other security logistics in place, adding that they would strive hard to ensure the safety of the students and staff.
Only the state-owned tertiary institutions were represented at the meeting but the deputy governor said the other Federal Government and privately owned- institutions in Ekiti State that were not represented will be invited again to keep them all aware of the security issue.
