Tony Elumelu is shining a light on a big problem facing healthcare in Africa and beyond: 40% of healthcare facilities don’t have steady electricity.
This important issue was raised by Elumelu, who is the Chairman of United Bank for Africa Group and the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, at the Abu Dhabi Health Forum. He explained how this lack of power seriously affects healthcare, especially in places with limited resources.
During his speech, Elumelu stressed the need for different sectors to work together to solve this problem. He said, “We need to find new ways to work together to get results. A lot of healthcare places in Africa don’t have steady power (I think it’s around 40%). Without electricity, healthcare suffers.”

Elumelu also talked about the positive impact of supporting healthcare entrepreneurs. Through his foundation, 700 healthcare entrepreneurs across Africa have been funded, with almost an equal number of men and women. This support is helping to bring new ideas and improvements to healthcare all over the continent.
He didn’t stop there. Elumelu also talked about how important it is to connect renewable energy, healthcare, and climate change. He asked, “We talk a lot about funding for renewable energy, but what about funding for healthcare too?” This shows the urgent need to use climate funds to make healthcare better and to deal with health problems caused by climate change.
Elumelu believes that everyone, no matter where they live or how much money they have, should have access to good healthcare. He said, “If healthcare in poor countries isn’t good, it can affect everyone. The world is connected, and climate change is making diseases spread faster.” This highlights the need for all countries to work together to improve healthcare for everyone.
In conclusion, Tony Elumelu’s words are a call to action. He’s urging governments, businesses, and organizations to work together to make healthcare better for everyone. As we face challenges like pandemics and climate change, his leadership offers hope for a healthier future for all.
