The Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Laraba Mallam has pledged to cooperate with Turkish construction Companies operating in Nigeria to have a full comprehensive environmental impact assessment is carried out on every major construction project involving Turkish Companies with a view to ensuring full compliance with local environmental regulations.
The Minister also stated that appropriate monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that every environmental impact assessment certificate issued for any project, is monitored to ensure full compliance with the specifications in the certificate. She added that the era of merely issuing E.I.A certificate is over.
Mrs. Mallam made the remarks in Abuja when a delegation of Turkish construction Companies led by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Ambassador Mustapha Pulat, accompanied by the Director-General of the Free Trade Zones, Overseas Investment and Services in the Ministry of the Economy of Turkey, paid her a courtesy call in her office in Abuja.
Earlier in his presentation to the Minister, the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria and leader of the delegation, Ambassador Mustapha Pulat told the Minister that his country is interested in having her construction Companies operating in Nigeria to localize their operations by fully complying with Nigerian’s environmental laws and regulations, adding that Turkish construction Companies must be environmentally friendly in their conduct and operations.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Turkish Director- General of free Trade Zones, Overseas Investment and Services in the Ministry of the Economy, Mr. Ugur Oztink revealed that Turkey has got tremendous experience in the construction industry, with strict adherence to environmental standards. He added that his country is willing to share the experience with Nigeria.
The delegation made up of Chief Executives of a Consortium of Turkish construction Companies made various presentations at the occasion, soliciting cooperation from various sectors of the Nigeria economy including Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment, which they believe will be of mutual benefit to the two countries including their private sectors.
