Former African champions, Enyimba retained the Federation Cup (Nigeria’s version of FA Cup) after beating Dolphins 2-1 on Sunday in Lagos.
The ‘People’s Elephant’ made amends for the failure to wrestle the league crown from Kano Pillars, and gave their fans a cause to celebrate by winning the second most important title on the Nigerian domestic scene.
After a barren first half, leading marksman Mfoh Udoh scored the opener on 52 minutes before Oknonkwo Chinonzo doubled the lead on 73 minutes.
Ten minutes from time, Emem Uduok pulled one back for Dophins, but it was little enough to stop the Port Harcourt-based club from tasting their first ever loss in the final of the annual knockout competition.
It was the fourth title for Enyimba after 2005, 2009 and 2013.
Meanwhile, River Angels accounted for Sunshine Queens 2-0 to win the female version of the Federation Cup. Asisat Oshoala and veteran Stella Mbachu were on target for the Port Harcourt, who claimed a double after winning the league.
