The aspiration of a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bayero Nafada, to become the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Gombe State vanished into thin air on Friday following his defeat for the sole ticket of the party in the hands of a former state Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya.
Yahaya polled 905 votes to defeat Nafada and another aspirant, Murtala Aliyu, to the governorship ticket of the party.
The APC governorship primary for Gombe State, which commenced on Thursday afternoon, lasted till Friday under a peaceful atmosphere.
Journalists and security personnel also kept vigil at Gombe International Hotel, venue of the primary election.
The 1,700 delegates accredited for the election started casting their votes Thursday afternoon, an exercise that lasted till 1.30am on Friday.
Yahaya, a former commissioner under the immediate past administration of Dr. Danjuma Goje, who polled 905 votes was declared winner, ahead of his closest rival, former Deputy Speaker, Nafada, who got 727 votes.
Chairman of the Primary Election Committee from the APC national headquarters in Abuja, Mohammed Ahmed, declared the results and eventual winner.
“We have successfully concluded this exercise and Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya scored a total of 905 votes. Usman Bayero Nafada got 727 votes and Murtala Aliyu scored 22 votes.
“In view of the total votes scored by Inuwa Yahaya, I hereby declare him winner and the candidate of the APC for the 2015 governorship election in Gombe State”, he said.
