On Thursday, former deputy governor of Kogi State Abayomi Awoniyi officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service.”
In a letter dated August 31, 2023, Awoniyi, who had been Governor Idris Wada’s deputy, informed the chairman of the PDP in the Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State that he was resigning from his position.
Despite not officially announcing his next steps, and not giving specific reasons for his leave from the party, his resignation may not be unrelated to his discontent with the party’s most recent governorship primary, which he called a “farce.”

As for his political affiliation, all signs point to him joining the All Progressives Congress in the near future.
“I hereby write to tender my letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party after 25 unbroken years of loyal and dedicated membership and service,” the letter, headed “Letter of Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party,” says, and was given to the public on Thursday.
I am resigning from the PDP effective immediately. Please share my deep appreciation with the party members of Mopamuro Local Government Area, Kogi West Senatorial District, and the entire state of Nigeria through your colleague LGA Party chairs.
I hope our friendship will remain even though we no longer share a political party.
Yomi Awoniyi was one among the candidates that voiced dissatisfaction with the PDP governorship primary election, which was followed by numerous charges of manipulation, as previously reported by Infostride News.
