Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr.
Bamanga Tukur on Saturday escaped suspected assassination attempt on his life.
The attempt, according to Oliver Okpala, the Special Assistant on Media to Tukur, happened along Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport area in Abuja while Tukur was on his way to Owerri via Abuja Airport to receive a doctorate degree award from the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The suspected assassins, who Okpala said operated in tinted Hilux van, tried to break into Tukur’s convoy.
The van according to Okpala was heading towards Tukur’s jeep but was prevented by Tukur’s security escort.
He said the van forcefully ran into the convoy, hitting and damaging three cars, including that of Tukur.
Okpala added that the occupants of the hilux demanded that the door of the car should be opened and the occupant pulled out.
He said the assassins in the process tried to disarm the security aides of their guns and this met some resistance.
Tukur and his driver “cleverly” escaped from the scene.
Okpala said the assassins again tried to reach Tukur when he wanted to board the aircraft but were again subdued by the airport security.
