Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to compensate the families of victims involved in recent stampedes across parts of the country.
Falana made this appeal on Friday in Akure during the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, a programme organized by the Ondo State Government in honor of the late Governor Adebayo Akeredolu.
The lawyer attributed the tragic incidents in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja — where over 65 people reportedly lost their lives while attempting to collect palliatives — to the failure of the Nigeria Police to provide adequate security at the gatherings.

“It was a failure of security; it’s not poverty that caused all the loss of lives,” Falana stated.
“If there is any process or gathering, the police are mandated to provide security.”
Falana urged the authorities to ensure such tragedies do not recur by taking proactive security measures during public events and distribution exercises.
The activist also commended Ondo State for its approach to maintaining peace and security through the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun.
He described the initiative, introduced under Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s administration, as a model for other states in Nigeria.
“Ondo State has become a reference point for ensuring peace and security in its domain through the creation of Amotekun by Governor Akeredolu,” he noted.
Falana’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the safety of vulnerable Nigerians during palliative distribution and other public events.
