The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed outrage over his prolonged incarceration despite numerous appeals and court orders for his release.
They described the situation as a humiliation not just to Kanu but to the entire Igbo race.
In a statement issued by Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family accused certain selfish politicians benefiting from the insecurity in the Southeast region of being behind Kanu’s continued detention.

Family criticized the Igbo political elite for allegedly failing to engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Kanu’s release, nearly a year after the President assumed office.
The family highlighted Kanu’s deteriorating health and the harsh conditions of his detention, including being held in Department of State Services (DSS) custody instead of a correctional center.
In addition, they questioned why Kanu was being punished for advocating for the freedom of the Igbo people and accused the government of neglecting his health and well-being.
Furthermore, Kanu’s family threatened to expose those benefiting from his continued incarceration and the insecurity in the Southeast region if immediate action is not taken to secure his release.
They expressed disappointment over the refusal of Justice Binta Nyako to grant Kanu bail, suggesting that the trial judge had not properly considered relevant legal precedents in the case.
The family emphasized Kanu’s willingness to stand trial but criticized the conditions of his detention, which they argue do not guarantee justice.
They called for fairness and urged the court to ensure that Kanu’s rights are respected and upheld throughout the legal process.
