Fayemi Condemns Maiduguri Military Base Terror Attack

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has condemned Monday’s terror attack on some military locations in Maiduguri, Borno State, where about 24 lives were reported lost.

 The Monday’s terror attack which was carried out by suspected Boko Haram insurgents was on the Air Force Base, International Airport, Maiduguri and some Army locations in some parts of Borno State.

 Condemning the attacks in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode, Governor Fayemi described it as barbaric and inhuman, stressing that an end should be found to the spate of attacks by the outlawed groups and other insurgent groups in the country.

 Fayemi urged the Federal Government to review the security situation in the country and work out a more strategic plan to cut the link supplying oxygen to the insurgent groups.

 Specifically, the Governor suggested a better collaboration among the relevant security agencies in the country, especially in the area of intelligence sharing. He also canvassed the strengthening of the Political Intelligence Unit in the office of the National Security Adviser.

 While noting the fact that the terrorists have graduated from using local bombs to sophisticated weapons and from poorly coordinated attacks to well coordinated attacks that leave many casualties, Governor Fayemi said all hands must be on deck to stop the orgy of violence , killing and maiming that are the hallmark of the terrorist attacks.

 Fayemi said: “Aside the socio, political and economic implications of the terrorist siege on the people and in the affected places, we should be concerned about the threat it poses to the security in the country.

 “This is the time to review our approach to this insurgence. A pro active measure should be taken, while intelligence gathering and intelligence sharing among the various security agencies should be improved upon.

 “The attack on the military locations in Maiduguri should send a dangerous signal to us all. And it should be a wakeup call to the relevant security agencies in the country. And this should in turn provoke a more coordinated efforts at tackling this dangerous trend.”

 Governor Fayemi, while calling on the Federal Government to demonstrate a greater political will at ending the spate of terrorist attacks in the country, expressed sympathy with the government and people of Borno State, as well as the relevant security agencies that lost officials in the attacks.

 He described the attacks and others before it as crime against humanity, stressing that loses so far recorded is unquantifiable.
