The Federal Government has directed all Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of tertiary hospitals across the country to activate alert systems for heightened vigilance in patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms.
The directive follows the global circulation of the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been identified in 29 countries, including Australia.
In a circular dated December 5, 2024, with reference number DHS/INSPDIV/017/VOL.1/46, the Head of the Teaching Hospital Division for the Permanent Secretary, Dr. O. N. Anuma, raised concerns about the variant’s potential public health impact, citing its demonstrated growth advantage over other circulating strains.
The letter, titled “Letter of Conveyance in Respect of the Newly Detected XEC COVID-19 Strain,” emphasized the need for proactive measures. It stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally.
You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
Hospitals were instructed to immediately implement alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for COVID-like symptoms.
The letter also urged collaboration with relevant stakeholders to facilitate the sharing of critical data on the strain and enhance monitoring protocols.
The circular highlighted the importance of timely information exchange between hospitals and the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure an effective response strategy.
The letter concluded with an appeal for cooperation, stating, “Please accept, as always, the assurances of the Permanent Secretary’s warm regards.”
