The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has inaugurated a 5-man Interim Management Committee (IMC) to reorganize and restore healthcare services in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. He said that members of the committee were carefully selected after due consideration of their cognate experience, individual merits, integrity and ability to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of healthcare service delivery in Nigeria.
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire said that the inauguration of the Interim Management Committee was not a punitive measure to the former management of the FMC, but a remedial measure to restore healthcare services in the hospital. He further appealed to all concerned to give the Committee full cooperation, in order to make the exercise a success.
Dr. Ehanire informed that the committee has the following as terms of reference: taking over all administrative, technical, operational and financial functions of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri and restoring humane healthcare services to Nigerians; reviewing the events leading up to the industrial unrest and ensuring inter/intra professional harmony among all cadres of staff and reviewing the integrity of financial transactions for proper records, amongst others.
Also speaking at the occasion, the IMC Chairman, Ndubisi Eke, promised to achieve the objective for which the committee was being inaugurated. He added that discipline, would be installed with human face.
Chike John Okafor, the Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, affirmed the House Committee’s commitment to ensuring that FMC, Owerri was open for healthcare delivery to Nigerians.
He also identified the membership of the committee to include: Prof. Ndubisi Eke as Chairman, Dr. Bridget O. Akin Otiko in charge of Nursing Services, Michael C. Okereke in charge of Accounts, Ayo Olagunju in charge of Administration and Abdu I. Msheliza in charge of Pharmacy. [FMH]
