The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Government Affairs is poised to provide critical leadership role necessary for sustainable local development initiative.
He made the remarks at the opening of a two-day forum of key functionaries of Local Government in Nigeria organized by the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
According to the Minister, the forum was held in realization that good governance and development at the local level is cardinal to the attainment of President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, in her welcome address at the meeting said, the need to ensure result-based collaboration made the Ministry, considers it “expedient to start with building relationship with the Local Governments, whose development is very critical to building of a strong nation.”
The Resident Representative of UNDP and Resident Co-ordinator, United Nations System in Nigeria, Dr. Daouda Toure, in his remarks commended the Federal Government for opening up a dialogue space in discussing improvements in local development in the Country, noting in particular the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Government Affairs as manifested by the one-day Stakeholders’ Forum on Implementation of Constituency Projects organized by the Ministry in September, 2013 and the recently held Forum for Local Government Functionaries in Nigeria. He enjoined the participants to come out with strategies and mechanisms that would strengthen and sustain dialogue between the three tiers of government on local governance and local development.
The forum was organized to strengthen the relationship between the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and Local Governments in Nigeria and create awareness of the Ministry’s role in coordinating and monitoring of the implementation of Government policies and programmes that are developmental in nature in relation to States and Local Governments.
