MUBI (NEMA Report) – Following the recent attacks on Mubi Town by Boko Haram insurgents, the National Emergency Management Agency and the Adamawa SEMA have so far recorded about 10,496 internally displaced persons in five camps situated in Yola South and Fufore.
The Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi disclosed this recently, adding that the agency which has been managing IDP camps and distributing relief materials in Adamawa and other States in the North – East that are affected by the insurgency would continue to establish more camps and provide all the basic needs of the displaced persons. He intensified that the agency has delivered adequate relief materials to all the established camps in the State and the new ones would be provided with tents. According to him, more people are still pouring into the State capital, while five women have safely given birth in two of the IDP camps.
Sani Sidi also noted that an advanced team of NEMA officials have been dispatched to assess the situation and take necessary action towards bringing succour to the displaced people. ‘The team, he said is led by the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Eugene Ezeh.’
While receiving the NEMA team, the Adamawa State Governor, Bala Jame Ngilari informed them that the government has sent vehicles for the evacuation of thousands of displaced persons, who were scattered in various locations around Mubi and those who escaped to Cameroon back to the established camps in Yola. “The tragedy has really stressed us. We require your intervention for both short and long term. Majority of the displaced persons live with their relatives in the host communities. They should come forward and register so that they too would benefit from whatever has been provided,” he stated.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Zainab Maina on behalf of the President sympathized and condoled with those who lost loved ones and property. She also averred that the President assigned her to assess the situation as well as assure them of his continuous support till the period of their return to their homes. She further explained that the Federal Government has been doing everything possible to end the insurgency.
The IDP camps are located in Dawarei, Girei, Malkwohi, Nyako Housing Estate, the NYSC camp and COCIN Church and the relief items provided at all the camps include: drugs, rice, clothes, mattresses, maize, buckets, mats, soaps, towels, cooking oil and sanitary items.
