In response to the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Benue, the Federal Government has demanded that all development partners and donor agencies urgently deploy and intervene in the situation.
On Thursday, in Makurdi, during the distribution of relief items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Betta Edu made the plea. Ichwa Camp is where the IDPs are currently staying.
Edu stated that it was necessary to make the appeal because of the great suffering that was being experienced by IDPs in the state of Benue.
She stated that the Federal Government would officially write to the offices of the development partners and donor organizations both inside and outside the country on the necessity of quick action in the humanitarian situation in Benue. This letter would discuss the need for immediate assistance.
“As a matter of urgency, the Federal Government of Nigeria is demanding that all foreign partners, funders, agencies, UN agencies, and indeed everyone in the humanitarian sector deploy to Benue.
“The current humanitarian situation in Benue is intolerable; people need to be adequately resettled in the homes of their ancestors.” The Benue State Government cannot handle everything on its own.”
She stated that her office would, in the future, however, keep a close eye on the interventions carried out by the partners in Benue.
The minister stated that the Federal Government had intended to begin the construction of resettlement dwellings at one site; but, due to the situation on the ground, development will begin at two different places.
“Over the course of the next half year, every thought that crosses my mind will be about you and how I may help find a resolution to this problem. She said, “We have worked with the governor to obtain land so that we can build homes for you at a reduced cost.”
