The Permanent Secretary, Common Services Office in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Yemi Adelakun has said that the Nigerian Government has been continuously initiating programmes aimed at improving the welfare of its workforce. He made this known recently when he visited the Lagos State Head of Service, Oluseyi Williams.
Yemi Adelakun disclosed that the welfare of workers is a priority of the present administration, indicating that Government will persist on the necessary steps that will improve the well-being of all civil servants. “The welfare of workers in terms of prompt payment of salaries, accommodation and the environment where they work has remained the priority of the Nigerian Government. Adelakun further explained that his mission to Lagos State was part of the initiative aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of service delivery by Federal Civil Servants in the States. Adding, it was to determine how service delivery can be improved and enhanced, especially the implementation of projects and programmes under the transformation agenda of the present government.
According to him, the exercise will also help the Government to conduct needs assessment and identify the challenges of civil servants in terms of their welfare, performance, the environment in which they operate, their infrastructure, tools and systems of operation as well as the cordiality of their relationships with the host communities. “We intend to open new channels of communication among Federal Civil Servants, the host authorities and the Nigerian public whom they serve. More importantly, the exercise will afford us the opportunity to create awareness about the ongoing reforms in the Federal Civil Service and also remind civil servants on the need to uphold the core values and ethics of the civil service such as stewardship, trustworthiness, engagement, professionalism, industry, transparency and accountability,” he noted.
The Permanent Secretary also said that the government is investing aggressively in the establishment of training facilities and upgrade of existing ones with a view to making workers receive training on their jobs. He revealed that the Federal Training Centre (FTC) in Lagos and other parts of the country have been upgraded and given a tertiary status to strengthen the capacity of professional training for workers.
The Lagos State Head of Service, Oluseyi Williams in her response commended the Permanent Secretary for the visit, saying that it opened a new vista of collaboration between federal and state civil servants. She urged the civil servants in the country to see themselves as drivers of the country’s development and not to combine politics with service.
While promising the State Government’s continued collaboration with the Federal Civil Service on issues of common interest, she appealed to the Federal Government to create more verification centres for pensioners to reduce the stress which they are subjected to during exercises. She urged the Federal Government to pay the arrears owed to the pensioners in the State, in order to reduce their daily sufferings and those of their family members.
