Abuja (Office of the Vice President Report) – The Nigerian Government has called for strict adherence to maintenance culture over public and private assets to avoid infrastructural decay.
President Goodluck Jonathan represented by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo on Tuesday June 10, 2014 at the commissioning of the Sunday Adewusi Housing Estate, Dakwa in Dei-Dei, Abuja which was built by the Nigeria Police said that it is sensible to always avoid eventual capital costs by paying regular attention to existing assets.
He also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Police and its management team for their diligent implementation of the housing project in their quest to provide excellent accommodation for men and officers of the Police Force. He mentioned that the exploit will motivate them towards effective and efficient service delivery; describing as instructive and commendable the fact that the 1,000 units of three, two and one bedroom houses at Dakwa, Dei-Dei, Abuja were developed through public, private partnership between a reputable developer and the Police Cooperative Society Ltd as financier of the project.
While thanking the Nigeria Police Force under the present Inspector-General, Mohammed Abubakar for building the 2,000 housing units in two years, President Jonathan noted that officers and men who are beneficiaries, will pay for the houses through the National Housing Fund (NHF) loans. “The Nigeria Police Force had access to this facility through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN),” President Jonathan said. He also noted that one of the key pillars of his administration’s transformation agenda is the Public-Private Partnership development model which has focused attention to practical mortgage and home financing. He urged all sectors as well as Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to emulate the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking earlier, the Minister of Police Affairs, Abduljelili Oyewale Adesiyan averred that the Housing Estate was built to enhance the welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police as it will assist in the area of accommodation in the FCT. He added that the gesture will make the Police to effectively carry out its mandate of maintaining internal security in the country.
In his remark, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar opined that the vision behind the 1,000 units of Sunday Adewusi Housing Estate through Public-Private Partnership was to ease the housing deficit and provide comfortable houses to the Nigeria Police. He also disclosed that the completed 1,000 housing units in Abuja are part of the housing units to be completed in all the States of the federation.
According to him, accommodation being the most important asset to humans, those who work tirelessly day and night desire decent housing and this has motivated the execution of the housing estate.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee, Paulinus Nwagwu and that of the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, Usman Bello Kumo as well as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro commended the Inspector-General of Police and solicited more funding for all security agencies towards timely and efficient service delivery.
