The FIFA Interactive World Cup success story continues to develop, with the event being honoured with two significant industry accolades in recent weeks. The FIWC was once again named by the Guinness World Records as the largest online gaming tournament in the world and received the Football Brand of the Year Award at the Football Business Awards in London.
FIFA and Presenting Partners EA SPORTS™ and Sony PlayStation® drive to provide an engaging experience for the FIWC community has also resulted in the FIWC not only being recognised for the sheer size of the tournament, but also for the strength of the brand.
The FIWC featured in the Guinness World Records for the first time in 2010 and the tournament has continued to grow significantly, breaking its own record every year since. This positive trend continued in 2013, with 2.5 million players signing up for the tournament and battling to become the best interactive footballer in the world.
The FIWC 13 season climaxed in Madrid where France’s Bruce Grannec was crowned the new FIWC champion following three incredible days of action and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all 20 Grand Finalists.
“Together with our Presenting Partners EA Sports and Sony PlayStation, we are eager to continue the incredible growth of this event, building on the 2.5 million players who competed last year. The event is going from strength to strength and the awards which the tournament has recently won are testament to the commitment of our lively online community.” said Ralph Straus, head of Strategy and Brand Management at FIFA.
This year’s FIWC 14 season kicked off with a ceremonial opening game at the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, and participants from all around the world can now compete to qualify for this edition’s Grand Final which for the first time will be played in the host country of the FIFA World Cup™, Brazil. The winner, in addition to holding the title of being an official FIFA World Champion, will receive USD 20,000, an invitation to the FIFA Ballon d’Or to meet the biggest stars of world football and a host of unforgettable experiences.
