(Office of the First Lady Reports) The Wife of Nigerian President, Patience Jonathan has identified the need for the three tiers of government to work together effectively towards bringing the dividends of democracy to Nigerians. The First Lady stated this recently when she launched the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Village Health Workers Scheme in the State House, Abuja.
Patience Jonathan said that the Federal, State and Local Government Areas must collaborate harmoniously for success; noting that the Village Health Workers Scheme is a demonstration of the firm commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan to giving Nigerians access to better medical care at the grassroots and creating jobs for the rural populace. She added that the scheme would facilitate improved use of medical facilities in the local communities and urged the Village Health Workers to be good MDGs ambassadors in the rural communities where they would be working.
In their goodwill messages at the event, the Governor of Kebbi State, Saidu Usman Dakingari; Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada and that of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan lauded the MDGs initiative as well as praised the First Lady for championing improved healthcare for grassroots communities.
The Chairman of the House Committee on MDGs, Alhassan Ado Doguwa commended the collaborative efforts between the Federal Government and the State Governments; saying all local government areas, no matter how remote and hard to reach should be involved in the scheme.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Precious Gbeneol in her remarks explained that the objective of the project is in accord with the internationally accepted concept for creating demand for health services.
