Ogun State Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of a fisherman, Segun Sikiru, whose body was found dumped in a lagoon in Iwopin, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area.
The suspects, all members of the local community, have been identified as Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa.
According to reports, Sikiru and his two sons had gone out fishing when they noticed suspicious activity around their fish trap.
The suspects were allegedly caught stealing from the trap, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence.
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, revealing that the suspects attacked Sikiru after he tried to raise the alarm and draw attention to the theft.
“When the deceased spotted them at his fish trap, he attempted to alert people in the area. However, the suspects attacked him, hitting him in the chest with a bamboo stick,” Odutola stated.
She explained that after realising Sikiru had lost consciousness, the suspects threw his body into the lagoon, while his two sons managed to escape the attack and alert authorities.
The arrests were made by operatives from the Abigi Police Division on Sunday after a report was filed by the victim’s family.
Odutola confirmed that Sikiru’s body had been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode, while an investigation into the case is ongoing.
This tragic incident has sparked concern in the community, as residents await further developments on the case.
