Flood victims in Adankolo, located in Lokoja LGA of Kogi State, have appealed for immediate intervention from the government and international organizations to mitigate the impact of severe flooding in the area.
The disaster has destroyed several homes, public buildings, and farm produce, plunging residents into extreme poverty.
Many affected residents expressed their willingness to relocate but lack the resources to do so.
During a visit to Adankolo New Layout on Sunday, some victims reiterated the need for resettlement support from the government.
They lamented that flooding has become an annual occurrence, wreaking havoc on the community.
Madam Patricia Ameh, a widow and mother of nine, described the devastating effect of the floods, which she said has left the community impoverished.
“My building has already been submerged, but I don’t have the money to pack my belongings or rent another house,” she said.
“I am appealing to the government to assist those of us affected by the flood.”
Similarly, Abdullahi Sadiq, another victim, criticized the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KSEMA) for not providing relief materials to the affected residents.
He added that the lack of clean water and proper sanitation facilities has made them vulnerable to waterborne diseases and infections.
It is worth noting that the Kogi State Government recently established 42 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across eight local government areas as part of proactive efforts to address the flood crisis.
However, residents in Adankolo say more direct assistance is urgently needed to alleviate their suffering.
