As floods continue to devastate communities along the River Niger, corpses have reportedly been washed away in Udaba, a community in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.
This was disclosed by Joseph Odemokpai, the Councillor representing Ward 8, which includes Udaba, Ofukpu, Agbavo, and Osomhegbe, during an interaction with journalists in Benin City.
Odemokpai lamented the dire situation, revealing that several communities remain submerged and the water levels are still dangerously high.
“The entire communities have been ravaged by floods, and we are working to relocate residents to safety camps.
Unfortunately, in Udaba, some corpses have been washed out of graves by the floodwaters. We’ve also lost some residents due to severe cold caused by the flooding,” Odemokpai said.
He further reported that other affected areas, such as Wards 9 and 10—covering Anegbete, Udochi, Ogomere, Ifekhu, and other communities—are facing similar devastation.
“Houses and farmlands with crops like cassava, rice, and yam have been submerged.
Farm produce, livestock, and properties have been swept away by the flood,” he added.
Odemokpai called on the federal, state, and local governments to urgently intervene and provide relief for the displaced residents. He noted that the local government authorities are taking initial steps but require the support of the state and federal governments.
He also appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) to assist the affected communities.
