Nigeria crushed Tunisia 4-0 on Saturday (December 14) in the first leg of the second round of the 2014 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup qualifier in Abuja.
Striker Uchechi Sunday netted a hat-trick whilst Patience Helen Okaeme was also on target to give the Falconets a resounding victory ahead of the second leg in a fortnight.
A spectacular second half performance from the Nigerians saw them unlock the Tunisian defence which remained impregnable during the first half.
On 50 minutes, Okaeme broke deadlock before Sunday strengthened the lead 60 seconds later. Uchechi completed her hat-trick with strikes in the 76th and 86th minutes to seal victory in grand style.
However, Nigeria coach Peter Dedevbo was the least convinced about the striking abilities of his team despite the huge scoreline.
“I am very disappointed in my team; they could have played better. The Tunisians are not a bad side and we have to work on our loopholes before the second leg,” he told the media in a post-match interview.
The return leg will take place in a fortnight in Tunis with the winner advancing to the final round of the continental qualifiers.
Two teams will represent Africa at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup scheduled for 5-24 August in Canada.
